Spanish Legal Services for Kentucky Residents

Living in Louisville, Lexington or elsewhere in Kentucky and planning a Spanish visa, citizenship matter or property purchase? Kentucky falls under the Consulate General of Spain in Chicago for consular procedures. Our New York-based, Spain-licensed attorney can help with Spanish-law planning remotely; we are not a Kentucky law firm or a consular filing office.

Spanish legal services by Constantin Razvan Gospodin Florea, abogado admitted in Spain, ICATF nº 5961. Based in New York. No Kentucky office, Kentucky Bar admission, or Kentucky/U.S. legal advice.

Kentucky residence, Chicago jurisdiction

Which Spanish consulate serves Louisville and Kentucky?

For consular matters, the Consulate General of Spain in Chicago lists Kentucky among its states. This includes Louisville, Lexington, Bowling Green, Owensboro and Northern Kentucky communities such as Covington and Florence. A Kentucky mailing address does not by itself establish eligibility to apply: the consular instructions may require evidence of actual residence in the district. Check the official Chicago consular jurisdiction.

Do not choose the New York consulate simply because your Spanish-law adviser is based in New York. Consular competence generally follows the applicant's residence and the particular procedure, rather than the adviser’s location or the city in Spain where you intend to live.

Applying for a non-lucrative visa from Louisville: what changes?

The Chicago consulate's February 10, 2026 non-working residence instructions include Kentucky residents and direct applicants to the Chicago BLS appointment process for personal submission. A non-lucrative residence visa does not permit gainful employment or online work. Do not select it merely because you intend to work remotely for a non-Spanish employer.

Other categories have different rules. Study, international telework, self-employment, family and nationality procedures cannot be treated as identical to non-lucrative residence. Start with the official Chicago consular services and, when expressly directed there for the specific visa, the BLS Chicago portal. BLS manages intake for delegated categories; it does not decide Spanish-law eligibility or guarantee issuance.

Plan the correct residence route

Identify what activity you will undertake in Spain, which immigration route is potentially applicable and whether any family members need separate documentation. Visa & Residency services.

Prepare the right evidence

Coordinate the Kentucky or federal source of each official record, current consular instructions, translation and authentication before ordering documents.

Allow for necessary attendance

Remote Spanish-law review does not eliminate a required in-person BLS, consular or Spanish-authority appointment. Confirm current rules before arranging travel.

Kentucky apostille vs. FBI apostille for Spain

Kentucky documents and federal documents follow different authentication authorities. The Kentucky Secretary of State authenticates qualifying Kentucky public officials' signatures. Kentucky vital records must carry the appropriate current State Registrar signature. Paper notarizations ordinarily need the relevant county-clerk certification; electronic submission has separate restrictions, and the state's e-apostille option is not available for vital records.

An FBI background check is a federal document and cannot be apostilled by the Kentucky Secretary of State. Use the U.S. Department of State federal apostille process. Do not substitute a Kentucky state police check for an FBI certificate unless your specific Spanish procedure expressly accepts that type of record.

An apostille verifies the signature or seal, not the underlying factual content or suitability of the document. Spain's applicable consular instructions govern the document type, its age and whether a sworn translation is needed. See our FBI and apostille guide for the general federal-document workflow.

No New York travel is needed for an initial remote discussion. The relevant consulate for a Kentucky resident remains Chicago where its official jurisdiction and procedure apply.
