What this California guide covers

Your California residence matters—your Spanish legal issue remains the focus

For visa applications, the Spanish consulate serving your lawful U.S. residence can determine filing channels and required local evidence. For a California birth certificate or notarized document, a state apostille may be needed. For an FBI federal record, authentication follows a different authority. These are distinct questions from which Spanish immigration or nationality route applies to you.

This page explains those California-specific practical issues. For eligibility, evidence strategy and legal representation, continue to our dedicated Spanish visa and residency services or Spanish nationality legal assistance.

Official Spanish jurisdiction

Los Angeles or San Francisco: which Spanish consulate?

California is split between the Consulate General of Spain in Los Angeles and the Consulate General in San Francisco. You should verify the jurisdiction of your county of legal residence and the rules for the exact procedure—not merely use the nearest city or any convenient appointment location.

Los Angeles — Southern California

Its official district includes Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino, Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Kern and Imperial counties, as well as other named areas. Arizona, Colorado and Utah also fall within its published district.

For example, the Los Angeles non-lucrative residence-visa instructions currently direct applicants to an in-person BLS appointment. Filing channels vary by category; do not assume that postal filing or an attorney's appearance replaces your required attendance.

Official Los Angeles jurisdiction →

San Francisco — Northern California

Its official published demarcation covers northern California counties such as Alameda, Marin, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Sacramento, Napa and Sonoma, and also serves several other western U.S. states and Pacific territories.

For example, the San Francisco non-lucrative residence-visa instructions currently require an appointment through BLS. Always read the specific consular page before arranging travel, translations or document issuance.

Important county-list discrepancy: Inyo

At the review date, both published Spanish consular district lists include Inyo County. Rather than silently assigning it to one office, ask the consulate to confirm jurisdiction for your residence and intended application before paying for an appointment or proceeding. This is an inconsistency in the official published lists, not permission to choose either office.

Consular boundaries, application centers and personal-attendance rules can change. The competent authority's instructions for the specific visa, nationality or consular service prevail.

Prepare documents correctly

California documents and apostilles for Spain

California public records

The California Secretary of State issues apostilles for qualifying California public officials' signatures, including eligible certified vital records. A document's issuer and signature must be appropriate for authentication.

Federal FBI records

An FBI identity-history summary is a federal document. A California state apostille is not a substitute for the relevant federal U.S. authentication process. Check the Spanish consular instructions for validity periods.

Translation & original documents

The Spanish authority may require an officially valid translation, originals, copies or in-person submission. Sworn translations, when required, are performed by independent duly authorized translators whom we may coordinate.

Official California guidance: Apostille FAQ and request procedure. For federal criminal records, read our FBI background check and apostille guide.

Frequently asked questions from California residents

Do I need to hire a lawyer based in California for a Spanish visa?

No. Spanish legal preparation can be arranged remotely with a Spain-licensed attorney based in New York. Applicable consular rules may still require you to appear in person at the designated visa application center or consular office. Spain Law NYC does not offer California or U.S.-law advice.

Which Spanish consulate serves California residents?

Spain maintains consular offices in Los Angeles and San Francisco with different geographic districts. Check the official jurisdiction pages for your exact county and visa category before booking; published lists contain a discrepancy for Inyo County.

Can a Spain-licensed attorney handle the whole process without my attending?

Not universally. Counsel can coordinate Spanish-law strategy and documents, but specific applications, biometrics, interviews, declarations or collections can require personal attendance. The competent authority sets those requirements.

Can I buy property in Spain from California without flying there?

Spanish property transactions can sometimes be coordinated using a properly drafted and accepted power of attorney, subject to notarial, identification, banking and transaction-specific rules. A Spanish lawyer can review the scope; not every step is guaranteed to be remote.

Are California apostilles the same as FBI background check apostilles?

No. The California Secretary of State authenticates qualifying California public documents. Federal FBI records require the appropriate federal authentication route; the California Secretary of State cannot apostille a federal FBI document.
