Spain Visa Consultancy for Washington D.C. Area Residents

Moving to Spain from the Washington region? We help eligible residents plan Spanish visa and residence applications, organize U.S. evidence and navigate the precise Washington consular procedure before investing in a relocation.

Your Spanish immigration pathway and the Washington application channel are separate decisions. Since October 1, 2026, BLS intake has changed for multiple visa types, while certain categories remain directly with the Consular Section.

Spanish legal services by Constantin Razvan Gospodin Florea, Spain-licensed attorney (ICATF nº 5961), based in New York. No local U.S. state-law services, D.C. office or bar admission.

A Washington-to-Spain visa file has three moving parts

Spanish legal route

Determine whether non-working residence, international telework, study, family residence or another Spanish authorization fits actual employment, finances and family circumstances.

Correct consular channel

Identify whether BLS Washington or the Spanish Consular Section accepts your particular visa and whether the applicant must attend personally.

U.S. evidence and Spanish filing

Check proof of legal residence, document issuers, FBI background records, certified civil documents, apostilles and translations before booking travel.

Which Spanish consular district serves D.C., Virginia and Maryland?

The official Washington consular district consists of Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina. This covers, for example, Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, Bethesda, Rockville, Baltimore, Richmond, Raleigh and Charlotte. Delaware and Pennsylvania are assigned to New York; South Carolina to Miami. District legal residence evidence is normally important; the applicable study category also recognizes qualifying enrollment in in-person studies within the district.

BLS Washington: October 1, 2026 change

The Spanish official submission notice moves most listed national and Schengen visa categories to BLS by appointment, including NLV, study, telework and various family applications. BLS Spain Visa Application Center, 1660 L Street NW, Suite 216, Washington, DC 20036. Short-stay and national-visa appointments are separate. BLS processes intake; it does not confer immigration status or decide visa outcomes.

Direct Embassy Consular Section: defined exceptions

The same notice reserves diplomatic/official matters and specific self-employed work or long-term residence-recovery classes to consular submission. Some direct filing procedures first require emailing scans of a complete application before the authority schedules an in-person appointment. The Embassy Consular Section at 2375 Pennsylvania Avenue NW is not the BLS center. Never presume email or post is universally available.

Choose the Spanish immigration route by the work you intend to do

Non-Lucrative Visa: retirement or non-working residence

Washington's non-working residence visa requires an in-person BLS appointment and sufficient guaranteed resources, including the published 2026 IPREM-based measures (400% main applicant plus 100% for each qualifying dependent). Its documentation is highly specific. No work or remote online professional activity is authorized. See Non-Lucrative Visa service.

Digital Nomad Visa: international telework

Washington's international telework visa requires a NIE before applying, a qualifying professional relationship, appropriate funds and evidence of eligible remote work. Its instructions provide BLS appointments and permit an accredited representative in stated circumstances; that possibility cannot be applied indiscriminately to NLV. Read our Digital Nomad Visa service.

Study and research

The Washington October 2026 student notice requires in-person BLS study-visa applications, including Fulbright recipients. It also states that, from August 2026, doctoral candidates use the researcher framework and prior competent Spanish authorization rather than automatically filing under ordinary study visas. Study dates, program status and specific checklist govern.

A Schengen Visa for a short visit is not a Spanish residence permit. U.S. passport holders may be visa-exempt for qualifying short stays, but nationality, travel purpose and intended duration control.

Apostilles for D.C., Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina

An apostille authenticates the issuing official's signature or seal; it does not prove the truth of every statement in the record. Follow the document's origin. A Virginia birth certificate does not become a D.C. record because the applicant moved to Washington. The U.S. Department of State is the competent federal authentication authority for FBI background checks; do not send the original FBI certificate to a state secretary for apostille.

U.S. record issuer determines the competent apostille channel
Document originApostille authorityKey distinction
D.C.D.C. ONCA authenticationDistrict notarizations or District public records, not FBI.
MarylandMaryland Secretary of State apostillesFor some notarized documents, a circuit-court clerk certification is needed first.
VirginiaVirginia Secretary of the Commonwealth apostillesNo other-state or FBI apostilles; obtain the appropriate Virginia record.
West VirginiaWest Virginia Secretary of State apostillesFollow the state office's signed-record and document preparation rules.
North CarolinaNorth Carolina Secretary of State apostillesN.C. state documents and qualifying notarized public records.

Birth and marriage certificates, criminal history records, physician certificates, financial statements and Spanish translations follow the actual visa checklist. We identify the issuing state, the specific Spanish requirement and whether an authorized sworn translator is needed. Never apostille or translate every record by default.

Nationality, conservation and recovery of Spanish nationality

Spanish nationality is a Civil Registry matter, not a visa shortcut. Conservation after particular nationality events, recovery after loss, registration by descent and registry corrections require an assessment of the Spanish Civil Code, evidence and the competent Spanish Civil Registry procedure.

Our Spanish-law practice can review family history, Spanish certificates, prior citizenship acts and possible limitation periods, and prepare a coherent legal file. A professional cannot replace a required personal declaration or appearance. We confirm Washington Civil Registry procedures before suggesting any representative, postal or remote filing. A private, coordinated move from Washington to Spain

For retiring households, international professionals and families, an effective relocation sequence combines legally supportable residence, consular timing, record preparation and Spain-side formalities. For affluent clients, discretion means disciplined document handling and precisely defined professional responsibilities, not an assurance that all appearances or official requirements can be delegated.

Retirees and families

Review NLV financial evidence, eligible healthcare cover, dependents and arrival planning. Official decisions remain discretionary under Spanish law.

Executives and teleworkers

Check remote-work structure, employment evidence, company and social-security issues; U.S. employment and tax advice belongs with appropriately authorized independent counsel.

Property and private relocation

Coordinate Spanish conveyancing, due diligence, NIE and powers of attorney when legally accepted; independent licensed tax and financial advisers handle their disciplines.

Washington-to-Spain questions, answered

Which states are within the Spanish Embassy Washington visa jurisdiction?

Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina. Relevant visas usually require eligible district and U.S. residence; an additional in-person-enrollment criterion applies to certain study applicants.

Do Washington residents apply for a Spain visa at BLS or the Embassy?

Since October 1, 2026, Washington's official place-of-submission notice assigns most listed visa categories to BLS Washington by appointment. Some classes, including specified self-employment and residence-recovery matters, remain at the Consular Section. Check the precise category.

Can a representative apply for my non-lucrative visa?

The Washington non-working visa instructions require the applicant to attend in person at BLS. A consultant can prepare Spanish-law documentation, but cannot substitute for mandatory attendance.

Can I work online under the non-lucrative residence visa?

No. Washington's official guidance excludes paid work and professional activity, including remote work. International telework is a separate immigration framework.

Where do I apostille an FBI criminal-history record?

The U.S. Department of State handles federal FBI document apostilles. State and D.C. authorities handle qualifying state/D.C.-origin documents; your residence does not change the issuing authority.

What changed for Washington PhD visa applicants in 2026?

The official Washington study/Fulbright notice says that from August 2026 doctoral applicants use the researcher rather than ordinary student visa pathway, with the relevant prior Spanish authorization.

Can someone submit documents by mail instead of attending BLS?

Do not assume mail submission is available. Washington's current category-specific BLS instructions specify appointments and personal attendance for many visas, and representative filing is permitted only when expressly stated.
