Why the place you apply matters

The Spanish visa route and the Houston filing channel are two separate decisions

First establish the Spanish legal route, evidence and family requirements. Only then select the permitted local filing channel, original documents and appointments. Different Houston categories are handled differently: assuming every visa goes through BLS, or that every document can be mailed, puts an otherwise viable application at risk.

Visa strategy

Evaluate whether non-working residence, international remote work, study or another Spanish route fits your intended activities, funds and family profile.

Document preparation

Map Texas-issued records, federal FBI certificates, apostilles, translations, insurance and Spanish authority requirements without ordering unnecessary paperwork.

Consular coordination

Identify the actual competent channel and personal-attendance duties for the selected category, then arrange the timeline and evidence review around them.

Which Spanish consulate serves Houston, Dallas, Austin and San Antonio?

All four cities are in Texas and fall within the Consulate General of Spain in Houston district. That same consular district lists New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi. Texas residence is the jurisdictional factor, not whether you live inside Houston city limits.

For visa categories requiring proof of residence, the Houston consulate's published checklists refer to a driver's license or state ID from the district; applicants who are not U.S. citizens must also check the applicable U.S. legal-residence evidence requirements. A mailing address alone should not be assumed sufficient.

Non-Lucrative Visa: BLS appointment and personal attendance

Houston's consulate outsourced non-lucrative applications to BLS. Its current BLS Houston notice says that, since April 1, 2025, postal submissions for the non-working residence category are no longer accepted and the applicant must attend an in-person appointment. Older individual pages still contain postal wording; follow the newer explicit notice and obtain confirmation directly before filing.

Non-lucrative residence does not authorize work. It should not be marketed as a digital nomad solution.

Study Visa: verify the applicable national-visa postal option

The Houston consulate directs study applications to BLS Houston and describes both appointment-based and postal options, subject to the current category-specific requirements. BLS strongly recommends in-person filing for students; mailing is not a blanket option for other categories.

The consular study instructions refer to submission two months before studies begin, with a justified-circumstances exception; review timing and supporting documents for your actual study program.

Digital Nomad Visa and other long-stay categories

International telework has a distinct Spanish legal framework under Law 14/2013; it is not the non-lucrative category. Houston's public BLS visa menu does not establish that every digital-nomad application goes to BLS. We verify the applicable Spanish consular or Spain-based authorization route, eligible work structure and applicant-location rules for each file before advising where to present it. Explore our Digital Nomad Visa service.

The consulate's filing-location notice distinguishes Schengen (with an EU-family exception), studies, NALCAP and non-lucrative visas outsourced to BLS from other categories. BLS is an intake provider, not the legal decision-maker or a law firm.

Texas apostilles and FBI background records follow different authorities

Texas birth, marriage and notarized records

The Texas Secretary of State issues apostilles for qualifying Texas records. Origin, certification and notarial requirements depend on the document: do not attempt to convert a recordable official certificate into a notarial copy.

Federal FBI background certificates

An FBI background check is federal. When a Spanish procedure requires its apostille, the competent authority is the U.S. Department of State Office of Authentications—not the Texas Secretary of State. Do not notarize the original federal certificate to obtain a Texas apostille.

We review which documents a specific visa or Spanish Civil Registry case actually needs, issuance dates, apostilles and Spanish translations. This is tailored preparation, not a promise that every case requires the same paperwork. Visa & Residency planning and Non-Lucrative Visa service explain the underlying Spanish-law work.

Spanish nationality and Houston Civil Registry procedures

Spanish nationality is not a visa product. The Houston consulate's conservation and recovery guidance states that the person's appearance is necessary for the declaration, with an advance Civil Registry appointment and document review. The nationality-by-option route has its own legal conditions and personal-declaration steps. We can analyze Spanish Civil Code grounds, assemble evidence and prepare arguments—but cannot replace a required personal appearance.

Unlike a BLS visa intake appointment, nationality declarations are handled through the competent Civil Registry channel; a visa filing center is not a substitute. Start with Spanish Nationality & Civil Registry services.

Authority: Houston nationality conservation procedure and recovery procedure.

Texas-to-Spain visa questions, answered

Which Spanish consulate covers Dallas and Austin?

Houston. Dallas and Austin, like San Antonio and the rest of Texas, fall within the Houston Spanish consular district.

Can I mail my Houston non-lucrative residence application?

The current BLS Houston notice states no postal applications for this category since April 1, 2025: book an appointment and appear in person. Older guidance mentioning mail should not override that notice.

Does BLS Houston process every Spain visa?

No. The Spanish consulate identifies specific outsourced visa categories and exceptions. International telework and other routes require their own channel verification.

Can the Texas Secretary of State apostille my FBI check?

No. Federal FBI records requiring apostilles go through the U.S. Department of State; Texas handles qualifying state-origin records.

Can a Spain-licensed lawyer attend my Houston nationality declaration instead of me?

No, when the consular procedure requires a personal declaration. We can prepare the Spanish-law file but not replace your required attendance.

Do I receive free legal advice during the first call?

No. The free introductory call is for intake, suitability and engagement scope. Individualized legal advice requires a paid consultation or an agreed engagement.
